India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train, set to operate between Howrah and Guwahati, is poised to significantly transform the travel experience by offering a faster, safer, and more comfortable overnight journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the inaugural service on January 17, 2026, with regular operations commencing on January 18, 2026. This new semi-high-speed train service aims to reduce travel time between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya) to approximately 14 hours, a substantial improvement compared to the current fastest train, the Kamrup Express, which takes about 20 hours to cover the 966-km distance. This reduction of nearly six hours will save valuable time for travelers. Key features and how they will transform travel include:

Enhanced Comfort and Amenities:

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed specifically for overnight journeys, featuring ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning for a restful sleep. It boasts modern interiors, adjustable window shades, reading lights, spacious tray holders, and hangers. The fully air-conditioned coaches will ensure a comfortable environment throughout the journey.

Improved Safety and Technology:

Passenger safety is a top priority, with the train equipped with the Kavach automatic train protection system to prevent collisions and an emergency talk-back system for communication between passengers and train staff. CCTV surveillance in all coaches further enhances security. The train also incorporates enhanced suspension for smoother rides and noise reduction technology, contributing to a more peaceful journey.

Modern Design and Sanitation:

The train features automatic doors with vestibules for smooth movement between coaches and an aerodynamic exterior. High sanitation standards are maintained through disinfectant technology that kills 99.9% of germs. Modern and hygienic washrooms with improved spray-prevention designs are also part of the amenities.

Connectivity and Economic Boost:

Operating six days a week, the Howrah-Guwahati Vande Bharat sleeper will connect prominent districts in West Bengal and Assam, including Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, Murshidabad, Malda, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Kamrup Metropolitan, and Bongaigaon. This improved connectivity is expected to boost regional mobility, tourism, and trade across the eastern and northeastern regions of India.

Catering and Accessibility:

Onboard catering will feature regional cuisine, with Assamese food served on trains originating from Guwahati and Bengali dishes on those from Kolkata. Special arrangements for Divyangjans (persons with disabilities) and Braille-labeled seat numbers are also included for convenience.

Fare Structure and Capacity:

The train will have 16 coaches with a total capacity of 823 passengers, including 11 three-tier AC coaches (611 berths), four two-tier AC coaches (188 berths), and one first-class AC coach (24 berths). Fares have been structured to be accessible for the middle class, with approximate prices for 3AC around ₹2,300, 2AC around ₹3,000, and 1AC around ₹3,600, including food. Notably, there will be no provision for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or waitlisted tickets, with only confirmed tickets issued. The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train marks a significant step in modernizing overnight rail travel in India, promising a comfortable, safe, and efficient journey between Howrah and Guwahati.
