Bridge to replace part of Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road on Pallikaranai marshland
SUMMARY
The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to construct a bridge to replace a section of the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road that passes through the ecologically sensitive Pallikaranai marshland in Chennai. The move aims to restore the natural water flow of the marshland, which has been severely disrupted by the existing road acting as a barrier. The bridge will allow water to flow freely beneath, aiding wetland conservation and flood mitigation. Environmentalists have long demanded this intervention to protect one of the last remaining urban wetlands in South India. The project reflects growing awareness of balancing infrastructure development with ecological preservation in rapidly urbanizing Chennai.
